My Photographic Journey

I guess my photographic journey began way back in the late 1960’s with a 35mm Kodak camera. It was purchased for me to take to Switzerland; my first time abroad and a school field trip. (Yes I still have those first pictures). In the 1970’s I owned a 35mm Praktika and then a Zenit E which I used between 1978 and 1986. In 1986 I moved over to a Minolta Dynax which I used until around 2000.

That’s when my digital journey began. In the first 10 years of the 21st century I went through a Fuji FinePix s602 and Olympus E500 and Canon 40D. So few pixels and such small files to store on the computer. All of that was about to change as digital cameras became more sophisticated and a more serious option for photographers. From 2010-2015 I used a Canon 7D – what a fabulous camera. Alongside the 7D I also used a Canon Powershot G9 followed by the G1X which became my lightweight ‘travel camera’.

In 2015 I made a jump up to the Canon 5D MkIII and then the Mk IV – using a FujifilmX-T2 as my travel camera from 2018 until mid 2022. The Canon R7 mirrorless has replaced the X-T2 and coupled with the RF 18-150mm lens makes a lightweight option for travelling.

Having taken some amazing photos with my 5D (particularly of air shows) I decided to sell the 5D and upgrade to the R5 MkII in 2024. I’m now coming to terms with lots of new technology and looking forward to capturing some happy moments in 2025.

Of course there were lenses collected on the way as well a various other bits of kit to help me with my hobby. In 2016 I took a 12 week part time Open University Course – I thought it about time to really learn how to take better photographs although I’m still at a ‘work in progress’ stage! There’s always something new to learn.
